It’s sad to not meet in person, but the benefit was that we had over 50 people attend the 2022 User Forum!

We covered a whole range of topics, getting deep into the nitty-gritty of some complex modelling, whilst also presenting some thoughts about how to model some of the big changes coming in the energy system, from hydrogen through to impact of renewables on hydro cascading.

  • Co-product modelling. Co-product sounds somewhat esoteric, but when we started outlining some of the new functionality to be able to model hydrogen (and heat and water), we saw a lot of excitement. Not only can you integrate electrolysis with pipelines, storage and H2 CCGTs, but a lot of interesting observations on the future price of hydrogen (dual value of the hydrogen demand constraint).

  • Nodal modelling. Remarkably topical in GB at the moment, we did rather focus on the Nordics where BID3 is being used as part of the Bidding Zone Review. But plenty to get our teeth into, with N-1, nodal pricing and Redispatch all on the list. That said, we still haven’t worked out how to decide which nodes future investment lands on: maybe one for our next User Forum?

  • Hydro Cascading. Implementations in Brazil and Spain were covered, and we also talked about where else it might be most relevant.

  • 2021 Developments (Patch mechanism, dual fuel, RES + storage linkage, core manager, etc.). A lot of new stuff to cover off here, but dual fuel got a lot of interest for modelling US markets, and the hybrid RES + storage set-up was perceived as hugely useful. We already have a queue of customers wanting to know more about the core manager (irony intended…)

  • Client survey results. Might sound like a dull topic, but getting feedback from all our clients is how we improve. Very positive overall, with some areas to improve

  • 2022.1 Developments. Lots was covered here, but you can read the dedicated page if you’d like more.

The complete set of slides, plus all the presentations, are available within the BID3 Client area. A great chance to catch up on all the exciting moments you might have missed!
